This offseason is set to bring big changes to the Portland Trail Blazers organization. The 9-season run of head coach Terry Stotts has come to an end, and speculation abounds as to who might be coaching the team in the coming season. One contributing factor in whoever is hired for the job will be how well they gel with Damian Lillard, who put on a stunning display of skill in the Trail Blazers’ post-season.

A new report from Shams Charania at The Athletic offers a sense of what the Trail Blazers’ shortlist for a new coach looks like, and it appears that the front office is exploring a wide variety of candidates to succeed Stotts.

According to The Athletic’s sources, the candidates include a trio currently working as assistant coaches: Becky Hammon of the Spurs, Chauncey Billups of the Clippers and Mike D’Antoni of the Nets. Also in the mix are South Carolina’s Dawn Staley and Brent Barry, the Spurs’ vice president of basketball operations.

Based on comments made to The Athletic earlier in the month, Lillard likes the idea of Billups joining the organization. (He’d also indicated his support of Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd, who recently removed his name from contention.) Hammon is also in contention for the open Orlando Magic head coaching position. It’s certainly an interesting pool to choose from, with a number of talented coaches involved — some of whom could make history.
