Last February, Ray Lewis, Brian Urlacher, and Randy Moss were all selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame when each was in his first year of eligibility.
Canton may have a similar situation arise this year as Tony Gonzalez, Champ Bailey, and Ed Reed headline the 2019 class of finalists for Canton.
Currently made up of 15 names, the list of modern era finalists will be narrowed down to a maximum of five enshrinees for the Class of 2019.
Following Gonzalez, Bailey, and Reed, the list is made up of Steve Atwater, Tony Boselli, Isaac Bruce, Don Coryell, Alan Faneca, Tom Flores, Steve Hutchinson, Edgerrin James, Ty Law, John Lynch, Kevin Mawae, and Richard Seymour.
In all there are three safeties, two cornerbacks, two offensive tackles, two coaches, one guard, one center, one tight end, one running back, one wide receiver, and one defensive lineman as finalists.
Seymour and Flores were eligible before but are finalists for the first time.
The Hall’s Board of Selectors will meet in Atlanta on the day before Super Bowl LIII to narrow down the list. The inductions will be made on August 3 in Canton.
Senior committee nominee Johnny Robinson and contributors finalists Gil Brandt and Pat Bowlen are also under consideration for induction into the HOF but are not part of the modern-era class.
