With training camp set to kick off later this week in Foxboro, the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting Tom Brady and the Patriots are not expected to agree to a contract extension before the team takes the field against the Steelers in Week 1 on September 8th.

With a $27 million cap hit for 2019, Brady is in the final year of an incentive-laden, two-year, $30 million deal with New England.

“No new deal is on the horizon at this point,” Pelissero reported Monday.

Should the six-time Super Bowl champion actually enter this year without an extension, it would be the first time the team allowed him to enter a contract year. About to turn 42, Brady threw for 4,355 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2019.

“I think that at some point New England would want to revisit that,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter told InsideHook earlier this week of a Brady contract extension. “He’s a great bargain and he’s as valuable as any player in football. He’s arguably the greatest player of all time so you’d think New England would want to lock him up as long as he wants to continue playing beyond this year. So, if he wants that deal, I’m sure they’ll get that deal done.”

It’s possible Brady wouldn’t want to sign an extension before this season in the hope that he’ll go out and have a great year and be able to cash in following the upcoming season.

Of course, knowing Brady and the Pats, it’s also possible a deal is already done and they just haven’t announced it yet.
