With training camp underway in Foxboro and the Patriots’ first preseason game less than two weeks away, there’s been much handwringing and head-scratching about when Tom Brady is going to get an extension that will keep him in New England beyond this season, his last under contract with the team.

Speaking with reporters during an impromptu press conference on Wednesday, Brady broached the subject but didn’t exactly sound like a guy who was desperate to sign a new deal anytime soon.

“Have I earned [an extension]? I don’t know, that’s up for talk show debate,” Brady told reporters with a grin. “What do you guys think? Should we take a poll? Talk to Mr. [Patriots owner Robert] Kraft, come on.”

This is the first time in nearly 20 years with the Patriots that Brady, who is turning 42 in less than a week, is entering a season with no term remaining on his contract.

Asked about going “year-to-year” with the team, the six-time Super Bowl winner evaded the question the same way he does a pass rush.

“We’re all day-to-day if you think about it,” Brady replied. “None of us are really promised anything. So, I’m trying to do the best I can today and just let those things work themselves out.”

Brady also addressed a few other topics during his surprise media availability.

The Patriots open their season on September 8th against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football.

If Brady doesn’t have a new deal by then, New England fans may be worried — but it doesn’t sound like he will be.
