The much-hyped Cleveland Browns suffered an embarrassing defeat on Sunday (Sept. 8th), falling to the Tennessee Titans 43-13 in week one’s most surprising upset. They continue their season-opener winless streak, having now dropped the first game of the season 15 years in a row.
The loss against the Titans was a rough one that included plenty of sloppy turnovers and penalties. Left tackle Greg Robinson was ejected from the game in the second quarter after kicking Titans safety Kenny Vaccaro in the head, and the Browns committed 18 penalties for 182 yards, their most in a game since 1951.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield was sacked five times and threw three interceptions, including a pick-six snagged by Malcolm Butler. After the game, he was reportedly taken for x-rays on his right arm and seen leaving with a soft wrap on his throwing hand. NBC reports that those x-rays came back negative on Sunday evening.
Despite the humiliating loss, Mayfield told reporters after the game that he remains optimistic about the Browns’ season. “Everyone is going to throw us in the trash,” he said. “And I think that’s good…I know how we’re going to react.”
“Everyone knows what the problem is,” he added. “Dumb penalties and hurting ourselves. And then turnovers on my part.”
The Cleveland Browns will next take on the New York Jets on Sept. 16th.
