With 21 points in the first quarter to give him 17,786 in his NBA career, Steph Curry surpassed Wilt Chamberlain (17,783) to become the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Warriors franchise.
After breaking the mark Chamberlain had held since 1964, Curry went on to drop 32 more points over the final three quarters and finished with 53 as Golden State beat the Denver Nuggets 116-107 on Monday night.
The two-time league MVP, who shot 14-of-24 from the field and made 10 of his 18 attempts from 3-point land, added six rebounds and four assists in 35 minutes of action in the win.
“To be anywhere near him in any record book or now be on top, it’s surreal and it’s wild,” Curry said. “If you grow up in the game of basketball and you hear his name, you know it’s something extremely special, no matter what it is.”
With 10 three-pointers on Monday, Curry now has 18 career games with at least 10 makes from deep — 13 more than any other player in NBA history. The victory also marked his seventh straight game scoring at least 30 points, one of the longest streaks in franchise history.
Curry’s accomplishment is great, but it is worth noting he became the Warriors’ all-time leading scorer in his 745th game for the franchise. Chamberlain set the old mark in just 429 games.
The big night for Curry was bittersweet for NBA fans as Jamal Murray, who scored 17 points for Denver in the loss, injured his left knee in the final minute of the game and had to be helped off the court.
A Tuesday MRI confirmed that Murray, the seventh overall pick out of Kentucky in 2016, suffered a torn ACL and will be out indefinitely. While losing Murray for the remainder of the season doesn’t kill Denver’s chances of making it back to the Western Conference finals, the loss of the star point guard is a huge blow to a team with aspirations of making another deep postseason run.
Though neither can fill his sneakers, Facundo Campazzo and Monte Morris will attempt to step in for Murray at the point.
