Though it seemed like the Carolina Panthers might be looking to alter their DNA after the retirement of Luke Kuechly and departure of Greg Olsen to the Seahawks, the organization is hoping to move forward with Cam Newton as their starting quarterback.
That’s per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, who reports that new Carolina coach Matt Rhule and his staff have been encouraged with how Newton has treated his rehab from a foot injury and are impressed with how intent the former MVP is to get back to top form.

With so much in flux in Carolina, it makes sense to have a proven starter in place at quarterback as the Panthers attempt to get back in the mix for the playoffs following a season that saw the team lose its final eight games to finish at 5-11.
Though a lot can still change and the outcome of a March workout could play a factor in what ultimately happens with Newton, it is now expected to be several months until the three-time Prow Bowler’s foot is game-ready.
Thanks to that timeline, any potential trade for Newton would likely bring back below-market value.
Rapoport’s report indicates that it won’t happen, but should the Panthers decide to part ways with Newton and cut him, they’ll save $19.1 million under the salary cap which could then be used to go after another veteran QB.
