Will Retired Quarterback Philip Rivers Make His NFL Comeback This Year?

With Indianapolis starting quarterback Carson Wentz currently sidelined for between five to 12 weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a piece of bone that had broken loose in his foot, the Colts are on the lookout for a new QB to take the reins.

As it turns out, the team may be able to take a trip down memory lane in order to find the QB of the future for Indianapolis as one of the team’s former signal-callers is thinking about making an NFL comeback.

After retiring in January following 17 seasons in the NFL, 16 with the Chargers and one with the Colts, Philip Rivers is already thinking about returning to play pro football, possibly as soon as this season.

“I’m just going to stay ready,” Rivers told The Los Angeles Times. “I want to make sure I’m very clear: I’m not predicting I will play in December or January, for that matter. One, you’ve got to have somebody who wants you, and two, it’s got to be right. But I have not completely ruled that out.”

Rivers, 39, is currently coaching high school football, but is also staying in decent shape in case he decides to move from the sideline onto the field.

“I’m not quite there,” he said. “I’m getting back there. I wouldn’t have made weight if I had to report last week, that’s for sure. But I am getting back into the lifting and running, and shoot, I occasionally throw a ball around out here in this heat. It’s not too hard to get a good lather going.”

Currently ranked No. 5 in career completions (5,277), No. 5 in passing yards (63,440) and No. 5 in passing touchdowns (421), trailing only Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning and Brett Favre in all three categories, Rivers started every regular-season game of his career (240) since being named the starter in San Diego in 2006.

A surefire Hall-of-Famer, Rivers would be a fascinating addition to any quarterback room in the NFL, especially Indy’s. Whether he can still play NFL football would be another matter.
