A 29-year-old woman is accusing NBA star Kristaps Porzingis of sexually assaulted her inside his apartment while he was a member of the New York Knicks.
Following the alleged assault, which the woman claims took place in February of 2018, the woman did not report the incident and instead contacted the Knicks about obtaining a payment of $68,000 to keep quiet about the “extremely aggressive encounter.”
Though she did not report the alleged attack until more than a year after it may have taken place, police find her credible and “believable,” according to The New York Post.
Porzingis, 23, who is now a member of the Dallas Mavericks, has denied the allegations made against him.
The player’s lawyer, Roland G. Riopelle, said they had been in contact with federal law enforcement about the matter due to “the accuser’s extortionate demands.”
“We also alerted the National Basketball Association months ago and they are aware of the ongoing investigation of the accuser by federal law enforcement,” Riopelle said.
Porzingis is not currently with the Mavericks as he continues to work out in Dallas rehabbing from an injury.
National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts said the union has “been aware of these allegations for some time, have evaluated the accuser’s claims and, based on what is presently before us, stand with Kristaps.”
