Since moving to the San Jose Sharks during the 2017-18 season, forward Evander Kane has become a consistently high-scoring player in a city that he’s developed a considerable fondness for. Unfortunately, new information recently came to light that casts a pall over his current home. His wife, Anna Kane, recently took to social media to accuse Evander of having bet on games he played in — including throwing some of them — and the NHL has announced an investigation.
At the New York Post, Kathianne Boniello has written a concise overview of the issues at hand. This includes Anna Kane posting a number of references to her husband’s gambling on Instagram. “How does the NHL let a compulsive gambling addict still play when he’s obviously throwing games to win money?” she wrote in one. Another post suggested that the couple had become estranged.
“This is when the addiction is more important then anyone and everything,” she wrote in a note accompanying the post.
On Saturday night, the NHL responded to Anna Kane’s posts. “The integrity of our game is paramount and the League takes these allegations very seriously,” the league said on Twitter, and announced that an investigation would commence shortly.
Evander Kane’s manager, Karl Mullins, opted for a relatively modest statement in response. “We’ve been advised not to say anything right now,” he said, and indicated that a fuller response would come after the investigation.
Unfortunately, Evander Kane does have a history with gambling, including being sued by a casino in 2019 over half a million dollars in gambling debt. A report from TSN from earlier this year indicated that Evander Kane had filed for bankruptcy. One hopes that, if his problem is as severe as it looks, he’s able to get help for it.
