With the MLB trade deadline (July 31) coming up soon, the rumors are coming thick and fast regarding which players could be on the move.

While it sounds like San Francisco is “all but certain” to keep Madison Bumgarner since a recent surge by the Giants has the team back in playoff contention, another big-name ace who was once thought untouchable looks like he could be dealt: Noah Syndergaard.

Sources tell ESPN the Mets are actively shopping the right-hander ahead of the deadline and will be seeking a high price for him in a starting pitcher-hungry market. “It’s beyond listening,” said one. “They want to move him.”

An All-Star in 2016, Syndergaard has a 44-27 record and 3.21 ERA for his career. However, this has been the worst year of his five in the majors, as he’s just 7-5 and has an ERA of 4.33, the highest of his career. That said, the 26-year-old is still an attractive trade target as his talent is immense and he won’t be eligible for free agency until after the 2021 season. That means any team that trades for Syndergaard will have two-plus years of control over him.

Though the Astros, Braves, Yankees and Phillies are all looking for starting pitching right now, the San Diego Padres may actually have the best chances of landing Syndergaard because of the package they can offer.

“The San Diego Padres have talked to the Mets in the past about Syndergaard and envision the right-hander as the ace of a developing rotation,” according to ESPN. “The Padres’ farm system is loaded, creating lots of middle ground for San Diego to structure a deal.”
