A dispute over NFL players kneeling during the national anthem led to a North Carolina man shooting his son during Thanksgiving dinner, according to authorities in Cary.
During the meal, 21-year-old Esteban Marley Valencia was arguing with his brother about kneeling in the NFL and the fight turned physical.
The father of the brothers, 51-year-old Jorge Luis Valencia-Lamadrid, went and got his shotgun after Valencia attacked his other son and patio furniture started flying.
When Valencia, who had been drinking, threw a water bottle that hit his father in the face, Valencia-Lamadrid fired his gun and shot his son in the hand and leg, according to Cary detectives.
When authorities arrived, the son was taken to the hospital and the father was arrested.
Police charged Valencia-Lamadri with one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, according to arrest records.
