Jameis Winston Says He’s One of the NFL’s Best Quarterbacks

Barring an injury to Drew Brees, the backup won't start a game this season for the Saints

Last season while playing quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jameis Winston became the first NFL QB in league history to throw for at least 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in the same season.

The former No. 1 overall pick finished his 2019 season with 33 touchdowns, 30 interceptions and 5,109 passing yards, tops in the NFL.

When he signed with the Saints this offseason, Winston made history again by becoming the first quarterback during the Super Bowl era to lead the league in passing and then change teams.

Despite going 28-42 over five seasons as a starter and having no better option than to take a one-year, $1.1 million contract with New Orleans to back up Drew Brees, the 26-year-old is still convinced he has the goods to be a force in the NFL.

Speaking with Bleacher Report, the former Florida State star said he is better than “a lot” of the quarterbacks who will enter the season as NFL starters. “I know what I’m worth,” Winston told the publication. “And I know day in and day out, without publicly coming in and saying it, that historically I’m one of the best quarterbacks to play the game.”

It’s unclear what NFL history books Winston is examining to help him reach that conclusion, but perhaps he is basing it on the fact that only Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger have ever thrown for more yardage than he passed for last season.

Give Winston this: He’s still confident.

“There’s people talking about me like I’m an old, washed-up quarterback,” he said. “Like I’m 40 years old. I’ve got so much life. I’ve got so much energy, man. This is not over for me.”
