Longtime Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen already has his next gig lined up once his NFL career comes to an end.
Olsen has signed a deal to join Fox Sports as the network’s No. 2 NFL game analyst once he is done playing football, The New York Post was first to report.
Fox will pair Olsen with Kevin Burkhardt once he retires, taking over for Daryl “Moose” Johnston on Fox’s second team behind Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. The addition of Olsen makes Fox “more contemporary,” and he has “shown he has potential to be very good,” according to The Post.
The 35-year-old has done some trial runs in the broadcast booth in the past and has also been hosting a podcast featuring long-form interviews with some of football’s greatest tight ends, including Mike Ditka, Shannon Sharpe, Ozzie Newsome and George Kittle. The three-time Pro Bowler has also appeared on ESPN’s Postseason Super Bowl Countdown Show for the past two years.
Fox execs are hoping Olsen can morph into their version of CBS star broadcaster Tony Romo instead of failed ESPN broadcaster Jason Witten, who was so bad in the Monday Night Football booth that he actually returned to playing in the NFL.
During his 13-year NFL career, Olsen — who signed a one-year pact worth $7 million with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason — has caught 718 passes for 8,444 yards and 59 touchdowns.
In a deal that mirrors Olsen’s, Drew Brees will join NBC as an NFL analyst once he is done playing for the New Orleans Saints, which will likely be sooner rather than later.
