Could Carmelo Anthony Be the Cure to What Ails the Celtics?

After a deflating home loss to the Rockets, something has to change in Boston.

Following Sunday’s 115-104 home defeat to the Houston Rockets at TD Garden, the Boston Celtics are officially in free fall.

Losers of seven of their last 10 games and four out of their last five, the Celtics are firmly entrenched as the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference and, as of now, are looking at starting the playoffs on the road with no home-court advantage.

That would have to be considered a failure for a team that many picked to represent the East in the NBA Finals.

So, with less than two months remaining in the season, how do the Green right the ship?

According to hoops scribe Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe, the way to do it is by bringing in an old enemy: Carmelo Anthony.

In a new piece, Washburn argues president of basketball operations Danny Ainge should use the team’s remaining roster spot to add ‘Melo to the roster in the hopes he can provide a boost off the bench.

“The Celtics wouldn’t be signing 2013 Carmelo or the one who will demand 30 minutes and play no defense,” Washburn writes. “If there isn’t enough minutes for a player such as Anthony, then he becomes a mentor and another veteran who can help his younger teammates. The fact is elite teams don’t waste roster spots. You load your roster with as much talent as possible and then allow the players to prove themselves, disregarding bruised egos.”

The addition of Anthony to a combustible team like this could be like trying to put out a fire with gasoline, but it’s clear the Celtics need to do something.

At this point, they are going down in flames anyhow.
