Over the course of his career, Colin Kaepernick has worn multiple hats, transitioning from wunderkind NFC champion to backup quarterback to activist, and now, to media mogul. Earlier today, Disney announced that it has signed Ra Vision Media, Kaepernick’s production studio, to a first-look deal.
As part of the deal, Kaepernick will be the focus of an exclusive docuseries produced by ESPN Films. Beyond this, though, Kaepernick and Ra Vision Media will establish a platform for directors and creatives of color that features content centered around minority experiences, social injustice, and the struggle for equality in America. Notably, this partnership is not exclusive to just ESPN or the Undefeated, indicating that Kaepernick’s influence could be felt across all of Disney’s properties.
“I am excited to announce this historic partnership with Disney across all of its platforms to elevate Black and Brown directors, creators, storytellers, and producers, and to inspire the youth with compelling and authentic perspectives,” Kaepernick said in a statement. “I look forward to sharing the docuseries on my life story, in addition to many other culturally impactful projects we are developing.”
After being unofficially (and maybe even officially) blacklisted from football in 2017, Kaepernick led a Nike campaign in 2018 and has now joined Disney in order to spread his message. In addition, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell recently apologized for his handling of Kaepernick’s peaceful anthem protest and encouraged current players to take a stand against racism and hatred. Although he will most likely never play in the NFL again, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, it is undeniable that Kaepernick is now one of the leading voices not just in sports, but in society at large.
