Though he’s short in stature, Kyler Murray had a big debut for the Arizona Cardinals.

The No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft, Murray was a polarizing prospect due to his height (5′ 10″) and prior commitment to playing professional baseball instead of taking the field in the NFL. But, the Cardinals saw enough out of the Oklahoma product to take him first in the draft and jettison their top pick in last year’s draft, quarterback Josh Rosen, to the Dolphins for pennies on the dollar.

On Thursday, the Cardinals and their fans got the first chance to see if they’d made the right call. By all accounts, it seems they did.

During his 10 snaps on the field, Murray went 6-for-7 for 44 yards and looked totally in command of Arizona’s offense. In fact,  Murray would have been a perfect 7-7 had rookie receiver KeeSean Johnson not stepped out of bounds before coming back onto the field of play to catch Murray’s seventh pass. Though the pass was caught, Murray was charged with an incompletion and the Cardinals were handed an automatic loss of down,

“I thought it was smooth,” Murray said at halftime. “I was anxious to get out there, move around and throw it a little bit. I really just tried to execute whatever coach called and I think we did that for the most part.”

Murray’s coach, Kliff Kingsbury, said his rising 22-year-old star “did a nice job tonight of putting it on the money.”

“I think he made quick decisions,” Kingsbury said. “That’s what we’re looking for, operated well and took care of the football.”
