Always known to be a level-headed individual who makes intelligent decisions after weighing right and wrong and the potential future consequences of his actions, former NFL player Antonio Brown has decided to remain in his role as the president of Kanye West’s Donda Sports despite a mass exodus of clients from the rapper’s sports agency.
Donda Sports lost star clients Jaylen Brown (Boston Celtics) and Aaron Donald (Los Angeles Rams) last night due to West’s well-documented antisemitic comments. Brown had initially told The Boston Globe he was going to remain with West’s agency even though he did not condone the 45-year-old’s lengthy hate speech, but luckily came to his senses, as did Donald.
The announcements from Brown and Donald came on the heels of Adidas’ decision Tuesday to cut ties with West, a move the company said will cost it $246 million that is in step with companies such as Balenciaga, Gap and Foot Locker ending their partnerships with him.
Despite the mass exodus from Donda Sports, Brown is standing with West and wrote in a Yoda-esque quip on Twitter, “As the President of Donda Sports I remain.”
He elaborated: “I remain true to the mission of Donda and our amazing staff and community. I remain dedicated to helping clarify statements taken out of proportion by the media. I remain committed to bringing new ideas, experiences, and designs to our world. I remain in support of the humanity that is Ye.”
So why is Brown sticking with Donda Sports and West when so many others are severing ties with a person who is unable to prevent himself from spewing vile commentary? It may be because he has been hit in the head far too many times and is suffering the effects of CTE. It could be because he is a fundamentally flawed person who doesn’t feel an obligation to do the right thing and generally doesn’t. Or it could be because Brown could use any income he can get from his role as president of the agency.
The one-time Super Bowl winner certainly needs money as a Broward County jury recently ordered Brown to pay the moving truck driver he allegedly attacked nearly three years ago $1.2 million in damages. Per court records, the judge awarded the damages to Anton Tumanove after the jury found Brown liable for $407,000 for Tumanov’s past and future medical expenses as well as $793,000 for past and future pain and suffering, according to TMZ.
During the alleged incident, Brown broke a window on Tumanove’s delivery truck with a rock and then struck him following a disagreement about the $4,000 delivery fee. Following the incident, Brown was hit with a felony charge of burglary with battery and two lesser charges of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and criminal mischief.
Brown wasn’t charged with making a smart, responsible, moral choice. Obviously, nothing has really changed. Need more proof?
