In a move that will likely fly somewhat under the radar thanks to most attention being focused on the results of the presidential election, the Boston Red Sox have re-hired Alex Cora as manager of their ballclub, Jon Heyman of MLB Network was first to report.
The Boston Globe has confirmed Heyman’s report.
Cora, who managed the team to a World Series win during his first year in Boston in 2018, was dismissed months after the conclusion of the 2019 season after his role in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal while he was a member of Houston’s organization was revealed.
Despite his role in the cheating scandal, Cora was still held in high regard by players on the team as well as ownership, so it is not really all that surprising the Red Sox decided to bring him back following a disastrous 2020 season that saw the team finish in last place in the American League East at 24-36.
After the Red Sox parted ways with Cora in January, the 45-year-old was suspended by MLB for the 2020 season for his role in Houston’s sign-stealing scheme. But, he was cleared of any wrongdoing during his time with the Red Sox following an MLB investigation.
“He does need to go through a rehabilitation process. … What he did was wrong. He acknowledged that to us and apologized to us for that,” team president and CEO Sam Kennedy said at the time. “But I’m a big believer in second chances. We all wish him well.”
