Could the 2020 Olympic Basketball Squad Be Even Better Than 1992’s ‘Dream Team’?

LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry are all part of USA Basketball's 35-player pool for 2020.

In sports, we’ve seen “The Greatest Show on Turf,” “Broad Street Bullies” and the “Big Red Machine,” but none of those squads quite lived up to their nickname like “The Dream Team.”

Littered with all-time players including Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, Team USA’s Olympic basketball team in 1992 was, and is, considered the best team to ever be assembled in any sport.

Until now?

In advance of the 2020 Olympics, USA Basketball has revealed the 35 players who are under consideration to represent the United States on the hardwood in Tokyo.

With LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Steph Curry, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis in the mix, the pool of players is stacked with All-Stars.

So could the 12 players who emerge from USA Basketball’s minicamp in Las Vegas this July with a spot on Gregg Popovich’s team take The Dream Team in a game of five-on-five?

Without knowing exactly who will be on the roster it’s tough to say … but the answer is no.

All due respect to James, Durant, Paul and the rest, but they couldn’t hold Jordan, Bird and Johnson’s collective jockstrap. There’s only one Dream Team – and it’ll stay that way through 2020 and beyond.
