There was a time not long ago when government secrecy around UFOs was expected. Not only that, it was also the sort of thing that fueled countless works of popular culture, from The X-Files and Close Encounters of the Third Kind on down. But in recent years, something has changed; we’re learning more and more about the U.S. government’s experience with flying objects that one could describe as “unidentified.”
Earlier this year, the Navy formally declassified several videos of pilots encountering UFOs. All of this has made the possibility of UFOs — once the stuff of dubious science — something that respected scientists can discuss in full. And now, a new report in The New York Times suggests that even more UFO information is on the way.
The article, by Ralph Blumenthal and Leslie Kean, notes that a small government agency has been studying reports of UFO sightings, and has a timeframe slated to release its findings. As Blumenthal and Kean write:
The report said the program, the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force, was “to standardize collection and reporting” on sightings of unexplained aerial vehicles, and was to report at least some of its findings to the public within 180 days after passage of the intelligence authorization act.
Some elected officials with oversight of the program have explored the national security ramifications of the potential findings. Others have spoken of it in terms of a broader sense of knowledge of science and technology, whether earth-bound in origin or hailing from somewhere else.
It’s a big world, after all — and an even bigger galaxy.
