The British army’s highest ranking transgender soldier married her partner in a ceremony over the weekend that’s making headlines around the world.

“There are not many more things that are feminine than a bride in a beautiful wedding dress,” Captain Hannah Winterbourne told reporters. “I never thought when I was young it could happen to me. It was a pipe dream. Until I met Jake, I never realized it was a goal I could achieve. It’s not sunk in yet.”

Capt. Winterbourne, who is in the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers, became known after she announced the decision to begin transitioning from man to woman while on active duty in Afghanistan five years ago. Her husband, actor Jake Graf, is also transgender and told reporters that he “never thought any of this was a possibility. Now I’ve got this beautiful Army captain wife and I’m so happy.”

The two have become transgender activists, with Capt. Winterbourne undertaking official duties as the transgender representative for the British army. Graf works as an actor, most notably portraying the character “Henri” in the Oscar-winning film “The Danish Girl,” which follows the story of one of the world’s first sex reassignment surgeries.

The couple also told reporters they’re ready to start a family.

“We want kids sooner rather than later. I’ve definitely got broody since turning 30,” Capt. Winterbourne, who is 31, said. “A lot of my friends have got kids now. We’ll go for surrogacy in the first instance and see how it goes.”
