The assumed leader of the Gambino crime family was gunned down outside of his Staten Island home on Wednesday.
Francesco Cali, 53, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds to his body according to the New York Police Department. Cali was transported to Staten Island University North hospital by paramedics where he was later pronounced dead, ABC News reported.
Cali’s wife and children were home at the time.
An investigation is ongoing but no arrests have been made so far. A 911 call was made around the time of the shooting about a blue pickup truck which may have ran over Cali before or after he was shot.
The last mob boss to be killed was Paul Castellano, another leader of the Gambino crime family, in 1985. Castellano’s murder was ordered by John Gotti, who later took over the family until being convicted of racketeering and Castellano’s murder in 1992.
