In the aftermath of Matt LeBlanc’s departure from the BBC’s Top Gear, The Guardian’s Stuart Heritage wonders what direction the show should take, including whether the BBC should replace LeBlanc or simply cancel the long-running show altogether.
LeBlanc has become the third host in four years to depart from the show, leaving it in the hands of co-hosts Rory Reid and Chris Harris. As Heritage sees it, Top Gear has three choices other than cancellation. The first is to replace LeBlanc with another high-powered celebrity, the second is to adopt a rotating host format, and the third is to scrap the third host role and move on with Reid and Harris alone. The decision Heritage prefers, though, is the termination of the once-beloved franchise, which has been forced to reinvent itself too many times in recent years.
