Georgian Chapman married Harvey Weinstein in 2007, and since, has had two children with him: India and Dashiell, seven and five. But when scores of women began accusing her husband of harassment, abuse, and rape, Chapman remained silent. But in her first interview since the allegations broke, Chapman is speaking out about her ex-husband, the allegations, and her life now.
The night before she was supposed to meet with Vogue, she called, sounding “worried, apologizing profusely, talking fast. She was not ready to address anything too difficult, did not feel prepared.” She told Vogue that she barely went outside for months after the news about Weinstein broke.
“I was so humiliated and so broken . . . that . . . I, I, I . . . didn’t think it was respectful to go out,” she said to Vogue. “I thought, Who am I to be parading around with all of this going on? It’s still so very, very raw. I was walking up the stairs the other day and I stopped; it was like all the air had been punched out of my lungs.”
Chapman still works at Marchesa, a fashion company she co-owns with Keren Craig. But after the news, it became “common knowledge” that no actress or bride would wear Marchesa’s clothes again. Chapman did not offer any clothes for awards season. She has had support since, though, and many people have reached out asking to wear something. Scarlett Johansson picked a Marchesa gown for the Met Gala recently.
During the interview with Vogue, Chapman completely broke down, so much so that her assistant came in with tissues.
“There was a part of me that was terribly naive—clearly, so naive. I have moments of rage, I have moments of confusion, I have moments of disbelief! And I have moments when I just cry for my children. What are their lives going to be?” she asked during the interview.
But she’s taking steps to move on. She is planning to move to a farm upstate, and get out of the townhouse she and Weinstein lived in together. Her close circle of friends remains around her, supporting her and believing she will make her way to a fresh start, knowing it will take time.
