For the first time, designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana brought their top clients from around the world to New York — instead of Milan — for a four-night blowout and multiple fashion shows, held in iconic New York spots, like the Metropolitan Opera, the Rainbow Room, and the New York Public Library.
Those who appeared on the Dolce & Gabbana runways included Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls, Naomi Campbell, Christian Combs, Ashley Graham and Maye Musk. The Los Angeles Times wrote that it was like being in a painting where everyone “wears mink coats, gold crowns, exotic leathers, impeccably tailored suits and spectacular gowns.”
Gabbana told The Los Angeles Times that the designers took inspiration from New York City.
“All of the inspiration about the collection is the building[s],” he said, according to LA Times. “It’s in the texture of the fabric. It’s in the print. It’s in the embroidery.”
The Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building were both inspirational for the designers, but one of their biggest inspiration came from New Yorker John D. Rockefeller, one of the richest people of all time.
