Dave Matthews gets earnest, detailing the highs and lows of his career and investigating how he feels about the unbelievable success his band continues to have in the latest Vulture’s “In Conversation” interview series.
Matthews took six years in between his previous album and his new one, Come Tomorrow, a time he spent interrogating himself.
“Am I challenging myself? Am I eating my own tail? Am I just feeding off the thing that allowed me to be doing so extraordinarily well? That’s always the tension,” Matthews told Vulture’s David Marchese. He also spoke gratefully of the wave of admiration for his band sparked by last year’s Lady Bird, and the central role his song “Crash Into Me” played.
“I have a strange relationship with a lot of music that I’ve written,” Matthews said. “So seeing ‘Crash Into Me’ in Lady Bird allowed me to hear my music without having to impose myself on it.”
