In order to make sure the show will go on in some capacity, the much-maligned Woodstock 50 festival will relocate from upstate New York to Columbia, Maryland.
Instead of being held at the original Woodstock site in Bethel, New York, the festival will now take place at Merriweather Post Pavilion from August 16th through the 18th and is being billed as “Woodstock 50 Washington.”
The original festival in 1969 attracted an audience of more than 400,000; max capacity at Merriweather Post Pavilion is about 32,000 people. One-day passes to the event are expected to go for anywhere from $129 to $595.
Organizers may have a tough time getting potential attendees to pay that price as the lineup, which originally included artists such as Jay-Z, Miley Cyrus and Halsey, has yet to be finalized and could change based on the relocation.
“When we heard that there was an opportunity to save this festival and bring a piece of American history to our community this summer, we jumped at the chance,” Howard County Calvin Ball exec wrote to festival organizer Greg Peck, according to Bloomberg. “Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia is a jewel of Howard County and one of the top music venues in the nation. It felt like such a natural fit to host a historic festival on our storied stage.”
There is a Woodstock, Maryland, which is about a 20-minute drive away from the Merriweather Post Pavilion.
