This is a story about a movie trailer, but maybe not in the way you’d expect. Think in very literal terms and you’ll have it — in other words, this is about a trailer that’s been used on the set of a lot of movies. And not just any trailer. No, this is about the Airstream that Tom Hanks has used for nearly 25 years. And now, it’s going up for auction.
Writing at Silodrome, Ben Branch has more details on both the trailer and the sale. The article notes that Hanks used the trailer from 1993 to 2017, making it his temporary residence for the making of at least 18 films. The earliest of these was Sleepless in Seattle; the latest was The Circle. The interior was custom-built according to Hanks’s specifications, and it includes a bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette and lounge area.
It’s estimated to sell for between $150,000 and $250,000.
Bonham’s will be offering the Airstream for sale as part of this year’s Quail Lodge Auction, which kicks off on August 13. An interview Hanks conducted for the auction house’s magazine offers more details on how the trailer came to be — and why he’s looking to part ways with it now.
“I got it in the days when movies moved slower. I had spent too much time in regular trailers with ugly decor and horribly uncomfortable furniture,” Hanks said — which led to him spending the money on this custom trailer. He told Bonham’s that he “doesn’t have as much time during set-ups” on movies today, hence his decision to part ways with it.
Will its buyer be someone who hopes to take it back on the road, or someone looking for a vehicle associated with one of today’s most beloved leading men? We’ll know more once the middle of August comes around.
