If someone had told you in 2011 that the Rocky movies would turn out to be a wellspring of compelling screen characters and stories, you might be forgiven for looking askance at them. And yet, both Creed and its sequel demonstrated that the characters surrounding Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa in the initial run of films had a lot more to say. Cinéastes got to see Michael B. Jordan’s star ascend even higher, while Dolph Lundgren got a critical reappraisal; to the extent that there is is Rocky cinematic universe, it’s been good for many of the people involved.
All of which might help to explain why it’s not terribly surprising to learn that Sylvester Stallone is working on another expansion of Rocky Balboa’s world — in this case, a prequel. At NJ.com, Chris Franklin notes that a recent Instagram post from Stallone suggests where he might take things.
“I started out this morning by writing a treatment for a Rocky prequel For streaming,” Stallone wrote — and went on to suggest that the project would, ideally, consist of several 10-episode seasons.
“When we first met Rocky in 1976, he was a very lost soul — a forgotten man, a wasted life until he was transformed into a winner,” Stallone later wrote. This project, as described here, would focus on Balboa beginning at the age of 17 and making his way through the major events of the 1960s.
“Here is a small portion of how my creative writing Process starts…” Stallone added in the Instagram caption. “Hope it happens.”
Is the world ready for a Rocky prequel series? We’ll know soon enough.
