While Daniel Craig will still play James Bond in the franchise’s next film, black British actress Lashana Lynch will take over the iconic 007 codename.
A source told the Mail on Sunday that the 25th Bond film will open with Lynch, who has taken over the 007 agent code following Bond’s retirement, seeking out her predecessor in Jamaica to convince him to return to action to take on a new villain.
“There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says, ‘Come in 007,’ and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful and a woman,” the source said. “It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but he’s been replaced as 007.”
Americans may know Lynch after she appeared as a fighter pilot in Captain Marvel.
Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga of True Detective fame, the upcoming Bond film is being shot in Italy and the U.K.
Writing for The Guardian, Noah Berlatsky cautions that fans shouldn’t get their hopes up about how large Lynch’s actual role in the new film will be.
“If the plan is to set up Lynch to take over the mantle from Craig and helm a few Bond movies herself, that would be great,” according to Berlatsky. “But it’s premature to give the film-makers too much credit. Experience suggests that, no matter what they say to the contrary, white guys are reluctant to pass their legacies on to anyone else.”
