If I could go back in time to some point this past year, it’d be May. I was fully vaccinated along with most of my friends, family and coworkers, and according to health officials, those fully vaccinated could finally mingle indoors without masks. It seemed there was a light at the end of the tunnel, and we were all prepared for the most hedonistic summer of our lives. “Hot Vax Summer!” we cried.
Now three months later, we’ve taken a steep downwards turn. COVID-19 cases are once again skyrocketing in the U.S. thanks to a lovely combination of the heavily transmissible Delta variant and low vaccination rates throughout the country prompting mask mandates to be reinstated in a number of states. There’s a scary sense we’re sliding right back into last fall’s wave of the pandemic, and the internet is coping the only way it knows how: with memes.
“My Fall Plans // The Delta Variant” is the latest meme circulating on Twitter, perfectly capturing how the Delta variant is royally screwing up our plans for the fall. Using pop culture and historical references, users are posting an image, often of the protagonist, from a movie, TV show or real-life event to represent their “Fall Plans” alongside an image of the plot twist that derailed it, illustrating “The Delta Variant.”
The meme format is similar to prior viral memes like “Expectations vs. Reality,” “The Show Villain/ The Real Villain” and “How It Started vs. How It’s Going.” And everyone’s getting in on it, including celebrities like Mindy Kaling and Kerry Washington, which means the meme is officially dead. No, I’m kidding (sorta.) Users are already poking fun at the meme for its prevalence on their Twitter feeds, while others have simply had enough.
For now, though, the memes are still funny, so let’s indulge in a few of the best to avoid facing our bleak reality:
