Gas station sushi is a joke.
And gas station nut butter sure sounds funny … but it might be your healthiest option during a road trip, according to a roundup of healthiest gas station foods conducted by the wellness site Mind Body Green.
Writer Liz Moody spoke with a number of nutrition experts, nuts (and single-serving nut butters and seeds) are your best bet for pit stop consumption. “Nuts and seeds provide a big ‘bang for your bite,’ so to speak,” explains Leah Silberman, R.D. and co-founder of Tovita Nutrition. “They’re high in calories, healthy fat, and protein, which is a good thing when you’re looking for a snack to curb your hunger and keep you satiated. Plus, they’re loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.” Just remember to look for ones that aren’t artificially flavored, sugarcoated or have added oils.
Otherwise, the advice is pretty simple: Jerky (which is also easy to eat while you’re on the road), cheese sticks, water, fruit (if available), hard-boiled eggs and KIND bars. But almost every health expert agrees with Ellen Vora, M.D., who suggests making a “mental note to pack plentiful healthy car snacks for the next road trip.” And no, Skittles and Starburst don’t count toward your daily fruit intake goals.
