Global drinks giant Diageo is building its first carbon-neutral distillery.
The under-construction site in Lebanon, KY will house Bulleit whiskey as its flagship and will be powered by 100% renewable electricity. According to plans, the distillery should be able to produce up to 10 million proof gallons per year, making it one of the largest carbon-neutral distilleries in North America.
The new 72,000 square foot distillery, dry house, and warehousing facilities will supplement existing production at The Bulleit Distilling Co. in Shelbyville, KY.
To offset the 117,000 metric tons of carbon emissions — the equivalent of taking around 25,000 cars off the road for a year — the distillery will forego fossil fuels in favor of electrode boilers, utilize solar-powered exterior lighting, minimize water usage at all stages of production and will reuse and recycle materials to achieve a pledge of zero waste for landfills.
The $130 million project is estimated to is expected to be operational by 2021.
