Life in a literary family has been a source of inspiration for many a writer. To cite one example, Martin Amis’s excellent memoir Experience deals in part with the vast legacy of his father Kingsley. And while Mariel Hemingway is best known for her work as an actress, she too has written a book about her literary family. 2015’s Out Came the Sun: Overcoming the Legacy of Mental Illness, Addiction, and Suicide in My Family deals with a number of heavy topics, not least among them the influence of her grandfather, Ernest Hemingway.

Now, the younger Hemingway has made a very different foray into the literary world. A new article by Clementine Ford at Air Mail chronicles her work with a self-publishing company, MindStir Media. Mariel Hemingway is one of two celebrities offering an “influencer package” through the company. The other? Kevin Harrington from Shark Tank.

MindStir Media’s website notes that the cost is $10,000, and includes a video message by Hemingway endorsing your book. For $25,000, Hemingway will also write an introduction for the book in question, along with some additional services from the company.

The whole article is well worth a read, and offers more details on everything from Hemingway’s pandemic reading (which includes Tolstoy and Ayn Rand) and her experience with the company so far. It’s a surreal yet compelling work, describing a situation that could accurately be described as stranger than fiction.
