Reviews of Sylvester Stallone’s latest Rambo movie, Rambo: Last Blood, have been overwhelmingly negative, with the movie currently at just 29 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But one recent opinion may sting a little more than the others: as Newsweek points out, Rambo creator David Morrell said this weekend that he “hated” the movie and is “embarrassed to have my name associated with it.”
In a series of tweets, Morrell distanced himself from the new movie, likening it to infamous bomb Waterworld (which he claimed “is a masterpiece compared to this”) and calling it a “clumsy exploitation film.”
“I felt degraded and dehumanized after I left the theater,” the author told Newsweek. “Instead of being soulful, this new movie lacks one. I felt I was less a human being for having seen it, and today that’s an unfortunate message.”
Morrell also criticized the film for its “post-it note caricatures,” telling the publication that “Rambo could be called John Smith, and the film wouldn’t change. It assumes the audience is familiar with Rambo’s background, whereas anyone under 40 will wonder what on Earth is going on with those tunnels.”

WATERWORLD is a masterpiece compared to this. Check IMDB for 1976's TRACKDOWN, starring Robert Mitchum's son James, with the same plot. RAMBO: LAST BLOOD is a clumsy exploitation film.
