Its forecasted return drew over a million fans in one week; admirers have been chomping at the bit for seven months since the sneak peek, and the last time anyone saw something new was 25 long years ago.
We’re not talking about sports, but we are talking about the most anticipated comeback of the coronavirus era: The Far Side cartoonist Gary Larson has published the first new cartoons in the iconic series since he retired the comic from daily syndication back in 1995.
The cartoons can be found under “New Stuff” on Larson’s website, which debuted back in December of 2019 to the delight of fans around the world. Readers of the comics page staple will instantly recognize the humor and style, but keen eyes will notice that Larson is trying something brand new.
In an intro letter to the new material, Larson explains the change, “… I decided to try a digital tablet. I knew nothing about these devices but hoped it would just get me through my annual Christmas card ordeal. I got one, fired it up, and lo and behold, something totally unexpected happened: within moments, I was having fun drawing again. I was stunned at all the tools the thing offered, all the creative potential it contained. I simply had no idea how far these things had evolved. Perhaps fittingly, the first thing I drew was a caveman.”
That’s right, the thing that inspired Larson to pick up a pen again was the tablet. (I guess that makes it a stylist.)
