Just saying that The Irishman stars Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino, who is working with Martin Scorsese for the first time, made the film the most anticipated movie of the fall season. The fact that it’s arguably the biggest plunge into the film world Netflix has made only added to the intrigue. Sure, the platform has had plenty of success (and lots of problems), but this is about as big league as it gets: Scorsese. De Niro. Pacino. Pesci.
It’s no wonder film buffs have been salivating at the chance to see any little peak of the gangster film that many believe will be on the same level, or even better than some of Scorsese’s great mob films from Mean Streets to Goodfellas.
They finally got their chance.
The Irishman, based on Charles Brandt’s 2003 book I Heard You Paint Houses, reunites Scorsese with De Niro and Pesci, throws Pacino into the mix and includes a supporting cast with names like Harvey Keitel, Ray Romano and Anna Paquin. You see pretty much everybody throughout the gorgeous two minutes and 12 second preview, but hardly enough to spoil the film that will make its world premier at the 2019 New York Film Festival. Netflix will then release the film in select theaters and on its streaming platform in autumn. It’s one of a number of films the company hopes will have an impact on Oscar season.
