Already one of the most powerful figures in the magazine industry, Anna Wintour just got a promotion, giving her two new titles and even more power at Condé Nast.
The longtime Vogue editor-in-chief — who has also served as the artistic director of Condé Nast since 2013, and the company’s global content adviser since 2019 — will now add the titles of worldwide chief content officer and global editorial director of Vogue to her resumé. The new titles will give Wintour, who has served as the editor-in-chief of the US edition of Vogue since 1988, editorial power over the magazine’s various international editions in countries across the globe.
Wintour’s new titles are part of what the New York Times called a “larger revamping” at Condé, which also saw the US heads of many of the company’s other leading titles taking on global editorial director roles as well. Will Welch will take over as global editorial director of GQ, and Divia Thani will take on the role at Condé Nast Traveler, as will Amy Astley at AD, formerly known as Architectural Digest.
The new global editorial director roles will give Condé’s New York-based team more power over international editions of the company’s titles, which had previously been controlled largely by the top editors in their respective countries.
Wintour’s promotion comes a few months after the editor found herself among many industry leaders facing backlash earlier this year for failing to foster a diverse and inclusive environment. The news of Wintour’s increasing power at the company also subverts years of rumors and speculation that the longtime EIC would be leaving Vogue.
Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch offered his support for Wintour in a statement Tuesday: “Anna’s appointment represents a pivotal moment for Condé Nast as her ability to stay ahead in connecting with new audiences, while cultivating and mentoring some of today’s brightest talent in the industry, has made her one of media’s most distinguished executives.”
