The pandemic has been a strange and ominous time for many retailers, and the last week has brought some particularly disheartening news, especially for spaces in the New York metropolitan area. The American Dream mall, located at the Meadowlands, faces an uncertain future after the pandemic, with numerous retail tenants exiting their leases.
That’s not the only instance of a high-profile retail departure in the New York metropolitan area, either. The Neiman Marcus store located in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards neighborhood is slated to close — one of several stores that the brand is shutting down. Writing at The Cut, Andrew Nguyen notes that the scale of the space — 188,000 square feet — were designed to attract a crowd of tourists and local workers.
“Hudson Yards is no longer an ideal space for us given the preponderance of restaurants and future office space in that mall,” said a spokesperson for Neiman Marcus. As for the developers of Hudson Yards, they seem to be eyeing a shift in what that space is used for — specifically, converting it into offices.
Whether that’s a sign of things to come in the post-pandemic world, or simply a sign of the shifting priorities of the Hudson Yards development remains to be seen.
The Hudson Yards location was one of 4 Neiman Marcus stores scheduled to close. Also affected were locations in Fort Lauderdale, Bellevue and Palm Beach. 17 Last Call outlets will also be shutting down as a result of this decision.
