With the 20th anniversary of the plane crash that killed John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her sister, Lauren Bessette, later this month, you can expect a today wave of stories over the next few weeks. One of them, a new A&E documentary called Biography: JFK Jr. — The Final Year, promises bombshells like the Kennedys’ marriage was “unraveling” and that Carolyn had developed a cocaine addiction.
A little less scandalous is the Adrienne Gaffney feature at Town & Country that looks at the couple’s last days, starting at the 1999 White House Correspondents Dinner, and the table JFK Jr.’s George magazine hosted. Among the guests sitting with the Kennedys, actress Claire Danes, actor Sean Penn and Hustler publisher Larry Flynt. Despite reports that the marriage was having its troubles, one George staffer told Town & Country, “Carolyn really was proud of John, and she was happy to be there to support him. She talked to everyone at the table and everyone at the next table. She went around to everyone on the staff and said hello.”
And if you’re looking to find out more about the third person on the plane, Lauren Bessette, there’s a second T&C article about the woman who was “on the fast track at Morgan Stanley, Bessette had an Ivy League MBA, was fluent in Mandarin, and had a sophisticated group of friends.”
