If you’d like to save money at the pumps, fill up your gas tank on a Monday morning — and steer clear of Friday afternoons.
That’s the advice of fuel-savings app GasBuddy, which tracks the cost of gas in over 150,000 stations across the country in real-time. In a study the app released exclusively to USA Today, GasBuddy found both the best and worst days to fill up nationwide in each state, with Monday being the clear, overall winner for penny pinchers.
Fridays, however, were statistically proven to be the most expensive days for gas across the board.
“Very early in the week, when gas stations are generally a little bit quieter traffic-wise, is a great time to fill up,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. “We generally see more volatility and higher prices later in the week.”
The only caveat with the Monday rule appeared to be that prices could tick up a bit by mid afternoon, so the best time to fill up is first thing in the morning — perhaps on your way to work. Fridays, according to GasBuddy, are when station owners look to cash in on weekend trips.
