When you think of the company Tesla, their work with electric vehicles is probably the first thing that comes to mind. But it’s worth a reminder that that’s not all of what Tesla does; the company also has a foothold in the solar power market, selling both solar panels and entire roof systems.
Tesla’s solar roof sales have hit a few obstacles in recent years, however. Last year, an increase in prices from the estimates some customers received sparked a controversy. And this year, a report from Electrek suggests that the number of solar roofs that Tesla has sold is fairly modest, compared to its other products.
It’s worth mentioning here that the figures cited by Electrek are for Tesla’s solar roof systems — not solar panels as a whole. The article cites a source close to Tesla as confirming that “Tesla deployed 71.5 MW of solar system in the US residential solar market in Q2 2022.” By contrast, the company’s solar roofs were much less — only 2.5 MW.
Based on their analysis, Electrek estimates that this represents around 300 houses in the second quarter of this year.
This has been a challenging year for solar power, which faced the effect of industry-wide slowdowns. And 300 houses is nothing to sneeze at — but neither is it an overwhelmingly massive figure. That said, the overall numbers for solar systems do seem encouraging, whiuch is good news as the race to lower emissions continues.
