After numerous starts and stops, Rodney Dangerfield didn’t reach the peak of his comedy career until late in life. While other comedians of his era made their mark in television and film, Dangerfield was all about his stand-up, writes Alex Halberstadt.
Dangerfield’s masterpieces could transcend logic: “I told my dentist my teeth were going yellow. He told me to wear a brown necktie.” Or make variations on a theme: “When I was born, I was so ugly the doctor slapped my mother” and followed it up with “I was an ugly kid. When I was born, after the doctor cut the cord, he hung himself.”
