Having been forced to abandon the name “Sussex Royal” for future commercial ventures after exiting the British royal family, the man formerly known as Prince Harry will also be rebranding as simply “Harry.”
The prince has asked attendees at a tourism conference to drop the “Prince” when referring to him as he begins his final round of public engagements before officially stepping back from his royal duties at the end of March, CNN reported.
“He’s made it clear that we are all just to call him Harry, so ladies and gentlemen please give a big, warm Scottish welcome to Harry,” said Ayesha Hazarika, the host at a sustainable travel event Harry attended in Edinburgh, Scotland on Wednesday, while welcoming the soon-to-be-former royal to the stage.
While Harry is reportedly still permitted to use his royal titles — Sir or His Royal Highness — through March, he has apparently chosen to abandon the descriptors in advance.
Harry’s rebranding comes shortly after he and wife/fellow royal family exit-er Meghan Markle were denied permission to use the name “Sussex Royal” for their future post-royal commercial endeavors. Last week, a source reportedly told the Daily Mail that if Harry and Meghan “aren’t carrying out official duties and are now seeking other commercial opportunities, they simply cannot be allowed to market themselves as royals.”
The couple issued their first official statement regarding the “Sussex Royal” dispute on their website Wednesday, writing, “While there is not any jurisdiction by the monarchy over the use of the word ‘royal’ overseas, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use any iteration of the word ‘royal’ in any territory.”
