Netflix announced upcoming animated adaptations of classic children’s books written by Roald Dahl like Willy Wonka, Matilda and The BFG.
While some of the titles have been transformed for the big screen before, like the iconic 1971 movie, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, this will be the first time the stories will be featured as animated series, The Verge reported.
Netflix’s foray into the classics may be its way of competing with other platforms, like Universal’s Illumination, which is adapting the works of Dr. Seuss.
The complete list of Dahl books to be mined by Netflix are: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, The Twits, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Boy: Tales of Childhood, Going Solo, The Enormous Crocodile, The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More, Billy and the Minpins, The Magic Finger, Esio Trot, Dirty Beasts, and Rhyme Stew.
Rather than ongoing shows, the streaming leader said the Dahl titles will be “event series and specials” that it’s set to start production on in 2019.
