Since 2011, marketing and advertising company SteelHouse has paid its employees up to $2,000 per year to go on vacation.
The rules are straightforward: You can go anywhere in the world. You can use the money on one trip or multiple trips. You can spend it on airfare, rental cars, gas, food, lodging, or basically anything else. You’ll be reimbursed up to $2K—as quickly as the day after you submit your expenses. If you don’t have the money in the first place, SteelHouse will let you use a company credit card to book your trip.
“Our culture is really simple,” SteelHouse CEO Mark Douglas explains. “It’s based on trust and ambition.”
The policy seems to be paying dividends for the company, which is based in Manhattan and is comprised of veterans from eHarmony, E*TRADE, Oracle, and the Rubicon Project. In the last three years, only five out of 250 employees have left the company. In addition, they report employees return from their vacations recharged and more productive.
In case you’re wondering: Employees are not allowed to stay home and pocket the $2,000 as a bonus.
“I actually want you to go somewhere and enjoy yourself,” Douglas says.
