True story: when your correspondent was living in Europe for work a few years back, I became used to paying about $15/month for two iPhones with unlimited data. That price was for both phones, yes.
Then I moved to New York, looked into getting a phone ad realized we don’t have the same consumer-protection services in place as, say, Denmark, where I was living. Long story short, I wasn’t going to get two iPhones, let alone one, for anywhere near $15. And that’s the premise for how I survived — and nearly didn’t survive — in NYC for two years without a phone.
But a new cellular plan from FreedomPop wants to beat even the Danes at the telecom game. They already offer many alternatives for expensive, contract-averse consumers to participate in the grid we all know and love so well.
Their newest plan is the most aggressive and promising we have seen, promising 1,000 minutes, 1,000 SMS and 1GB of 4G LTE data provided by AT&T or Sprint for — brace yourself — $50 a year. Aka around $4 a month. Aka about 14 cents a day. Know you’re gonna blow through that data? You can bump it up and still pay way less than what a large carrier would charge.
Customers can also get cheap Galaxy 5s ($150) and LG Tributes ($80), which each have a full-year plan included in their price.
