Fans caught a first glimpse of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker today, and he doesn’t disappoint.

The trailer for Todd Phillips’ new Joker flick dropped online this morning, reported Consequence of Sound, revealing Phoenix as the classic villain.

According to the outlet, the much-anticipated trailer seems to live up to the film’s promise of a deep character study that blends dark comedy and tragedy.

“My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face,” Phoenix, as Arthur Fleck, says in a voiceover. “She told me I had a purpose, to bring laughter and joy to the world,” he continues in the trailer, which you can watch below.

Fans caught an early sneak peak of the film last night when it debuted at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Phillips was coy when asked about the new standalone one-off at the event, reported Consequence of Sound via The Hollywood Reporter.

“I don’t have a lot to say about the film, as it’s still taking shape, but also because I want it to be a surprise,” he said, adding, “There’s been a lot of chatter about what this film is and what it isn’t and most of it hasn’t been accurate.”

When asked about the movie’s genre, Phillips did admit that the film is a tragedy, but it’s unclear whether the Joker himself agrees.

“I used to think my life was a tragedy,” Phoenix says in the trailer. “But now I realize, it’s a comedy.”

Joker hits theaters on October 4.
