Avengers: Endgame hasn’t, uh, ended.
The final installment of the Marvel Studios franchise will once again be shown at movie theaters across the country — this time with additional footage. The decision to re-release the movie, while not expressly copped to by the filmmakers, was likely inspired by the movie’s second place finish in the all-time worldwide box-office competition. Avengers is just behind Avatar.
Marvel chief Kevin Feige made the announcement at a press junket for Spider-Man: Far From Home, CNN reported. Feige said the movie will now feature a previously deleted scene — “a few new things at the end of the movie” — in an obvious attempt to lure fans back into theater seats.
The Avengers flick has already earned $2.743 billion across the world but that’s still about $44 million behind James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster, Avatar, according to Boxofficemojo.com. The Marvel movie had a record-breaking opening but has since slowed down, raking in just under $4 million this past weekend in North America.
Even if Avengers manages to surpass Avatar, it likely won’t hold on to the top spot forever — especially considering the very movie it’s attempting to surpass has a few sequels of its own in the works. Cameron has said that there are “multiple” Avatar movies yet to come, despite the setbacks and delays to production he has encountered in the 10 years since the first chapter was released. The first sequel is currently scheduled to debut in December of 2021.
